Happy Sunday. Here is this week’s grab bag of things to gander/ponder/pause on:
Artful Shell Lighting
As I’ve mentioned here and here, I find hospitality design endlessly intriguing, and the work of the former Soho House alums behind Ward + Gray (Wildflower Farms, Hotel Perle, The Bellevue, The Sanderling) is not to be missed. Also not to be missed? The Abalone sconces from their new lighting collection. Maybe it’s because I live on an island and the ocean is so close. Maybe it’s because I’ve loved and collected shells with obsessive fervor since I can remember and adore seeing any and all homages to them in interiors. Or perhaps it’s because shells are everywhere at the moment. Whatever the reason, I can’t stop looking at the details and the richness of the colors, all crafted by expert hands in Venice. Absolutely stunning.
The Suede Boot Brigade
I credit two women with instilling my deep appreciation for boots. My mom and Stevie Nicks. In the below photo you’ll find mom in Yves Saint Laurent with my older brother, Haze, mom’s notorious miniature pony, Red Cloud, and their dog, Pauly, looking as chic in her twenties as she does in her seventies now.
As for Stevie’s influence, well, it’s limitless. Boots also feel like armor to me. Strength in a shoe. And there’s something about suede that adds velvety dimension and an extra layer of interest to things. Right now I’m loving this fold-over situation, the top stitching on this conical heel, and this creamy white suede pair (available for a song). Also, you can’t go wrong with Staud. A Blush that Sticks
I’ll be forty-five in February. I’ve never worn a ton of makeup and I seem to wear less and less with each passing year, especially since I work remotely now and I’m not in a magazine office every single day. In the American South, this shift might be considered “letting myself go” (giant BOO to that phrase) but there’s real freedom and peace in it. Just ask Ms. Anderson. When I do wear it, my skin is just different now. I used to have natural color in my cheeks, for example, and now my pallor is more Edwardian-woman-on-laudanum. I’ve found that the only blushes that deliver color with staying power are Cloud Paints by Glossier (which give Elle Fanning in The Great vibes) and the powder blush from Tower 28 Beauty below. The latter is dramatic so apply with a light hand.
